I have always been facsinated with New Orleans and the holiday of Mardi Gras, so when I was given Minx in pink and black vertical stripes for the month of Mardi Gras, a mask was born.
I wanted it to be a reflection of my unique personality, I happened to find a mask with a handle, instead of a traditional tie on.
The construction of mask was tedious and at times, I thought I had overextended myself. I took a mix of Akzentz Shine On and Wildflowers microglitter in Rosey and handpainted the accent pink color throughout the mask and handle. The Minx, however, needed to be the showcase of the piece. Pink and black glitter scrapbook paper from Hobby Lobby served as a base for the Mink and the paper was cut into shapes of butterflies of different sizes. The Mink were applied in various angles to make the butterfly wing detail, along with handpainting and/or 3D butterfly construction. The backs of the butterflies were even handpainted on the back with a pink and black glitter scheme. The butterflies were then attached to wires with hard Light Elegance Lexy hard gel, then mixed in with plumes of feathers and an artifical rose detail.
The final result of this piece far exceeeded my expectations, from what I had pictured in my mind. I would be proud to attend a Mardi Gras party or masquerade ball with this as the centerpiece of my ensemble.
